Good Stuff Dog Cake

dogcake1.jpg

Meet Pepper, she’s a black lab chow mix (which explains her black tongue). It was her Birthday yesterday. We think, she was rescued by my friend so it’s iffy on when her actual Birthday is and how old she might be. Pepper’s favorite food might be popcorn, but she gets to eat that almost everyday and I wanted to make her something special. Plus, what’s a Birthday without cake?!

When I was looking up a recipe for this pup’s birthday I found recipes that had ingredients like peanut butter and carrot incorporated, but I wanted a cake that had it all. So I made my own recipe up. This cake has ALL the good stuff that a dog loves - peanut butter, banana, carrot, apple, and bacon, oh my!

The minute I walked in the door with her cake, I was greeted with lot of jumps, and lip licking and drooling. She absolutely loved her cake and will enjoy eating it over the next few days.

I highly recommend treating your best puppy friend to this cake. Whether it’s their Birthday, adoption anniversary or they’ve just been a really good girl/boy. If you do, be sure to share photos of your pup enjoying the cake and tag me @alleydoesfood so that I can see!

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1/2 banana, mashed

  • 1/4 c peanut butter

  • 1/4 c apple sauce

  • 1/2 c carrot, finely shredded (about 1 carrot)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 T honey

  • 1/2 c flour

  • 1/2 t baking soda

Frosting

  • 1/3 c peanut butter

  • 1/4 c plain greek yogurt

Filling

  • 1/2 banana, mashed

Topping

  • uncured bacon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.

  2. Mix the peanut butter, banana, apple sauce, egg, honey and carrot until well-combined. Add in the flour and and baking soda and mix well.

  3. Pour your batter into a greased pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes.

  4. Let the cake cool for about 10 minutes before removing from the pan. Cut out your two circle cake pieces if necessary (see notes). Layer the cake as follows: Cake, frosting, filling, cake, frosting, topping.

  5. Serve to your dog and watch them have the time of their lives.

Notes

Flour: I used whole wheat flour. All-purpose and oat flour are also great options.

Bacon: Make sure your bacon is uncured and low sodium if possible. That is the healthiest option for your dog. I used uncured, low sodium turkey bacon for my cake.

Toppings: Have fun with the toppings! You could also use dog treats, shredded carrot or anything else your dog really likes.

Tiered Cake: If you want to make a tiered cake like mine you can use two small cake pans (if you have them) or a loaf pan and cut out your own circle (like i did).

Cupcakes: If you want to make cupcakes, this recipe will make about 6. You can use the filling to stuff in the middle of your cupcakes or leave that part out.
