Air Fried Falafel

airfriedfalafel1.jpg

Traditional falafel is made by soaking dried chickpeas overnight, but to make things a little easier I made a recipe using canned chickpeas. Although you can see from the picture that they still cracked a little, they stayed together well and still taste amazing. While anything deep fried is always amazing, I made mine in the air fryer as an healthier option.

About 3 Healthy Servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cans chickpeas, drained

  • 2 stalks green onion, sliced

  • 1/4 cilantro, chopped

  • 1/4 c parsley, chopped

  • 1/4 c dill, chopped

  • 5 cloves garlic

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 c flour (I used 1-1 GF flour)

  • 1 t baking powder

  • 1/2 t baking soda

  • 1 t onion powder

  • 1 t coriander

  • 1 t cayenne

  • 1 t pepper

  • 1/2 t salt

  • 2 T sesame seeds

  • oil for frying (I used avocado oil)

Other

  • tzatziki sauce

  • hummus

  • tahini

  • sliced cucumber

Directions

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a food processor until well blended.

  2. Using damp hands, roll the mixture into 1 1/2 - 2 inch balls and then toss them in some type of cooking oil.

  3. Air fry your falafel balls at 390F for 12-15 minutes, turning them over half-way through.

  4. Serve with tzatziki sauce, hummus, tahini, slice cucumber or whatever you have to dip.

Notes

Gluten-free: This recipe is gluten-free if you use a gluten-free flour. I used 1-1 gluten free flour.

Dairy-free: This recipe is dairy-free.

Chickpeas: If you’d like to use dried chickpeas, you will have to soak them overnight covered in water. If you do this, then you can omit the flour.

Tzatziki Sauce: Buy it pre-made or make your own. My recipe is included here.
