Copycat Trader Joe’s Bloody Mary Salsa
I don’t know about you but I LOVE a bloody mary!! I honestly didn’t love bloody marys for the longest time. It wasn’t until I moved to Charleston and tried Charleston Mix’s Bloody Mary mix that I became a fan. I tell everyone who doesn’t like bloody marys to try this mix because its unlike any other I had in the past. If you are local and want to try it you can order online at their website or World Market also sells the mix. Both the veggie and spicy mixes are great but I personally love the spicy!
Anyways when I saw the Bloody Mary Salsa at Trader Joe’s I knew I had to try it, and well I loved it! And like most seasonal items that you can’t get all the time, I had to find a way to may it myself. Great thing about Trader Joe’s products is that they’re made with mostly all whole ingredients. This means all I had to do was read the ingredient label to find out what ingredients I needed to make it myself.
With a tiny bit of experimenting, I think I successfully replicated Trader Joe’s Bloody Mary Salsa!
Makes about ~4 cups of Salsa
Ingredients
1 jalapeno, seeded & finely diced
1 T chopped green chili peppers (from the can)
1/2 yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 T olive oil
1 T tomato paste
3 T water
28 oz can diced tomatoes
2 T + 1 t horseradish
2 T worcestershire
2 T apple cider vinegar
1 T lemon Juice
2 t paprika
1 t chili powder
1/2 t cayenne
1 t salt
1 t pepper
Directions
In a medium sized pot on medium heat cook the jalapeno, green chili pepper, onion and garlic in the oil until the onion is translucent. Then add the tomato paste and water and mix until the tomato paste incorporates with the water.
Add in the remaining ingredients and combine. Bring to a simmer, cover and let the salsa cook for about 8 minutes.
Remove from the heat and bring to room temperature. You can eat at room temperature or refrigerate to eat cold. Enjoy!
Notes
Gluten-free: This recipe is gluten-free.
Dairy-free: This recipe is dairy-free.
Chopped Green Chili Peppers: You can always omit this and add more jalapeno if you like.
Horseradish: This is a must if you are trying to get that bloody mary flavor!
Spice Level: I would say this recipe, as-is would be at the mild spice level. You can add some of the seeds in the jalapeno to up the spice level or add additional green chili pepper.
